Case management software is law firm management software. Law firms collect a tremendous amount of information to prepare for a case. Case management software is utilized by the service provider to develop, to manage, to maintain and/or to organize data and/or files of the clients, of existing clients and/or of the potential clients of the service provider. Traditionally, the case management software completes and/or executes features and/or functions which may be associated with and/or may be based on the services provided by the service provider and/or with the files of the existing clients. Case management software is used to collect, organize, process, store, and distribute court data within the court and to external agencies. The systems perform simple and repetitive tasks faster, with greater accuracy, and at a lower cost than would be incurred doing them manually.
Document management programs are typically qualitatively much more robust than the functionality offered by case management programs such as Time Matters or Amicus Attorney. Such programs typically do not offer full text indexing or boolean searches and you have to manually choose where to put the document. Document your work flow by writing out checklists. These should document all your procedures from case intake and file opening to the file closing/archiving process. Documentation of alternate ways to handle fine collections and enforcement. Awareness of ethical issues that arise in everyday operations of the court.
